Auwal Dankano, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State, has urged the state government to suspend all overseas scholarship programs and redirect the funds to support local universities.

Dankano made the call in response to the recent sharp increase in registration fees at Northwest University, which rose from ₦19,000 to nearly ₦53,000. He attributed the hike to the university’s financial challenges but said the increase contradicts Kano State’s policy on free and accessible education.

He advised the government to reverse the fee increase and explore alternative funding options to ease the burden on students and their families.

Dankano suggested that suspending overseas scholarships and reallocating those funds to Northwest University and Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education could help cover their financial shortfalls. He estimated that with about 10,000 Kano indigenes enrolled in each institution, the government would need approximately ₦1.5 billion annually to bridge the funding gap and ensure education remains accessible.
