Local government administration is being suffocated, Tinubu warns
President Bola Tinubu stressed the importance of enhancing the local government system to support community growth and provide effective governance within a strong federal structure.
He expressed concern over the stifling of local government operations and asserted his opposition to centralizing it. During a meeting with Yoruba Leaders of Thought at the State House, Tinubu highlighted the necessity for governance to be progressive and responsive to citizens’ essential requirements. Despite facing challenges, he noted that his administration had made significant strides in the past year.
In a statement released on Friday by the President’s Media and Publicity Special Adviser, Ajuri Ngelale acknowledged the challenges faced but also highlighted the progress made.
The administration successfully halted the negative trends and can confidently state that Nigeria is no longer in crisis. The focus now shifts towards ushering in a period of growth and prosperity.
This commitment was made to the people and will be diligently pursued. Despite facing difficulties, there is a strong resolve to navigate through them and bring about positive change.
The worst times are behind us, and we are on track to overcome obstacles. Gratitude was expressed towards the dedicated team working tirelessly, with an assurance that every effort will be made to ensure all Nigerians benefit from effective governance.
The President promised Nigerians that his government would ensure that every penny spent delivers value, aiming to establish a legacy of prosperity for future generations.
He emphasized the importance of leaving behind a nation of pride and wealth for our children, free from the burdens of poor governance.
Tinubu stressed the need to enhance governance at all levels and promote fiscal federalism to ensure inclusivity and fairness for all citizens.
Ongoing progress is being made in healthcare, road infrastructure, and education. I urge you to closely monitor the actions of state governors and remind them to prioritize the needs of the people in their development plans.
By fostering collaboration and synergy, Nigeria has the potential to become a leading nation globally. Local government management is facing challenges, but community development initiatives are offering hope for survival and growth.
I strongly oppose any attempts to centralize power at the federal level, as our country operates under a federal system with distinct state and federal administrations.
Each state should tailor its approach to governance based on its unique circumstances. We must ensure that our revenue-sharing formula aligns with principles of fiscal federalism. Expect me to advocate for these principles consistently, rather than resorting to short-term measures for political gain before elections.
He emphasized the growing population and the increasing need for more housing space due to geographical requirements.
This growth serves as the foundation for flexibility at the local government level, highlighting the necessity to expand and develop.
Tinubu expressed gratitude to a delegation of distinguished Nigerians and emphasized the importance of continuous support and faith in Nigeria, promising that his government would meet expectations.
He debunked the notion of Nigeria printing paper money as a means of survival, acknowledging the challenges faced but expressing optimism for a brighter future.
The President concluded by highlighting Nigeria’s resilience through difficult times, likening it to a baby successfully being born after enduring labor pains.
Bayo Aina, National Secretary, representing Prince Tajudeen Oluyole Olusi, praised the President for prioritizing infrastructure investments across various sectors.
We applaud your prompt action in enhancing and modernizing our nation’s infrastructure in healthcare, aviation, transportation, and education.
Your dedication to ensuring transparent and effective governance is commendable. We unequivocally pledge our full support to the vision of greatness you have outlined for Nigeria, aiming for a prominent global position by the end of the 21st century. Aina concluded with firm resolve.
