Major Opposition Setback Looms as Kwankwaso and supporters Eye Defection to APC
Nigeria’s political landscape may be on the verge of a major shift as reports indicate that Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), is preparing to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
According to emerging information, plans are underway to integrate Kwankwaso—a dominant political figure in northern Nigeria and former governor of Kano State—into the APC fold. The development has sparked widespread reactions among his supporters, with many pledging unwavering loyalty and readiness to follow him into the ruling party.
Speaking to Nigeria News 247 on Sunday, Kano State NNPP Chairman, Hashimu Dungurawa, affirmed that the party’s base remains firmly aligned with Kwankwaso’s decisions.
“Kwankwaso is a household name in the North. His leadership record is unmatched, and wherever he goes, we will follow,” Dungurawa said. “He brought stability during his time as Minister of Defence, and as a former Senator and governor, his contributions are well-known.”
Dungurawa further added, “If joining the APC would allow him to contribute to solving Nigeria’s leadership crisis, then so be it. We are his loyal supporters. Whatever direction he chooses, we’ll stand by him.”
Speculation about Kwankwaso’s potential defection has intensified in recent weeks, particularly following unconfirmed reports that he is being considered as President Bola Tinubu’s possible running mate for the 2027 elections. While the Presidency has yet to comment publicly on the matter, political insiders suggest high-level talks are ongoing.
In a dramatic turn, the APC’s National Chairman and Kwankwaso’s long-time political rival, Abdullahi Ganduje, reportedly resigned from his position last Friday, allegedly in response to the party’s plans to accommodate Kwankwaso. A source familiar with the development told Daily Post that Ganduje’s resignation was seen as necessary to pave the way for Kwankwaso’s entry into the party.
“Despite their bitter rivalry, Kwankwaso’s defection is considered crucial for the APC’s 2027 strategy,” the source said. “Ganduje’s opposition to the move left the party with limited options.”
Ganduje, who previously served as Kano State governor, had been expected to consolidate APC’s influence in the state. However, the party has remained fragmented in Kano, with Kwankwaso’s growing popularity contributing to the APC’s underwhelming performance in the 2023 general elections.
As anticipation builds, observers say Kwankwaso’s defection—if finalized—could realign power dynamics in the North and reshape the contest leading to 2027.
