More Governors, Political Heavyweights to Join APC Ahead of 2027 – Gov. Sule
Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has revealed that more governors and prominent political figures are set to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), as part of the party’s strategy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme aired on Sunday, Governor Sule dismissed allegations of intimidation and political witch-hunts leveled against the APC by opposition elements, particularly the African Democratic Congress (ADC)-led coalition.
“Yes, we have discussed [our strategy]. It’s not something I will reveal here. As they plan, we also plan. We are not just sitting back watching. Politics is all about strategy, and at the end of the day, the better plan will win,” Sule said.
He noted a trend of defections to the APC, saying, “We keep getting more and more governors from the PDP joining us. Very soon, you’ll hear of another governor crossing over. Senators are decamping and returning to the APC almost every day. These are all deliberate plans, not coincidences.”
His comments come in the wake of a recent political summit where opposition leaders unveiled a new coalition under the ADC platform. The meeting, which signaled a coordinated effort to challenge the APC in 2027, saw the presentation of ADC membership cards to key figures, including former Senate President David Mark and ex-Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, who were named interim national chairman and secretary of the coalition, respectively.
Other notable attendees at the summit included Labour Party’s Peter Obi, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former governors Nasir El-Rufai and Rotimi Amaechi, Senator Ireti Kingibe, Dele Momodu, Emeka Ihedioha, and Dino Melaye.
Governor Sule, however, dismissed claims that some political actors are reluctant to join the coalition due to fear of persecution by the APC-led federal government.
While some observers have described the ADC coalition as a promising political alternative, critics—especially from within the APC—have questioned the coalition’s coherence, structure, and long-term viability as a unified opposition front.
