The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has sharply criticised the Presidency for its recent comments suggesting that President Bola Tinubu has no intention of extending his tenure beyond 2031, calling the statement “presumptuous” and reflective of “arrogance in power.”

In a statement issued on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said President Tinubu’s constitutional mandate ends in 2027, and that Nigerians would not accept him remaining in office “a day longer” without earning it.

“The Presidency’s hurried reaction to Nasir El-Rufai’s claim that President Bola Tinubu wants to be a life president only proves what many Nigerians have suspected — that this government is out of touch and dangerously complacent,” the party said.

The ADC argued that discussions about 2031 are premature and disrespectful to democratic processes.

“For the President to already speak of staying in office until 2031 suggests he sees re-election as a formality rather than a constitutional duty to show Nigerians his performance. Re-election is not automatic, and President Tinubu has not earned a second term,” the statement added.

The party accused the Tinubu administration of deepening national divisions and said the public’s focus is on performance, not political longevity.

“In just two years, this administration has further deepened divisions across the country,” the statement said, warning that public trust in government continues to erode under Tinubu’s leadership.

The ADC called on Nigerians to remain vigilant and demand accountability, stating that democracy thrives only when leaders are reminded that power belongs to the people.
