NNPP Calls on INEC to Disallow Congresses Led by Kwankwaso
The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the public to disregard reported congresses organized by the Kwankwasiya Movement, led by Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, describing such actions as unconstitutional.
In a statement on Monday, the party’s National Secretary, Mr. Ogini Olaposi, emphasized that the NNPP’s court-sanctioned congresses have already been conducted and concluded.
Earlier, the Kwankwaso-led group had informed INEC of its intention to hold fresh congresses and a convention for the NNPP, scheduled from November 25 to January 2026.
The NNPP maintained that the group has no authority to organize congresses on the party’s behalf, noting that the Memorandum of Association established during the 2023 presidential election has long expired. The party also highlighted that Kwankwaso, who was the NNPP’s 2023 presidential candidate, along with some members of his faction, remain expelled from the party for anti-party activities.
“We are still amazed that a man of Kwankwaso’s standing would insist on hijacking a party that provided a platform for him to contest the 2023 presidential election,” the statement added.
The party called on INEC to uphold its legal duties by adhering to court orders and ensuring that the authentic leadership of the NNPP is reflected on the commission’s website.
