The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued an open apology to the people of Abia for failing to meet their expectations over the years. The party acknowledged that this shortcoming contributed to its defeat in the recent gubernatorial election in the state.

Addressing journalists at the PDP secretariat in Umuahia on Thursday, following a stakeholders’ meeting, the Vice Chairman and Acting Publicity Secretary of the party, Abraham Amah, expressed the party’s regret over its past mistakes and emphasized its commitment to making significant changes.

“We have learned from the mistakes of the past and are determined to correct them,” Amah said. He assured that the party is ready to do things differently and chart a new course, leveraging the lessons learned. He also highlighted that the PDP remains intact across the state’s 17 Local Government Areas.

Amah expressed optimism about the party’s future, noting that several political heavyweights are expected to join the PDP in the coming days, which would bolster the party’s strength. He addressed the recent defections within the party, comparing it to an Iroko tree shedding its leaves to make way for new growth.

“In the past few months, our party has seen some members leave. This is a necessary change, and we are managing it effectively. Nature abhors a vacuum, and as people leave, new members will join us. The PDP remains strong and we are confident in our ability to compete and win in 2027,” Amah stated.

During the stakeholders’ meeting, former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu vowed that the era of imposing candidates on party members is over. He affirmed that the party will now allow members to choose their leaders democratically.

Meanwhile, Asiforo Okere, the Abia State Chairman of the PDP, urged party members to stay resolute and continue their support for the party. He emphasized the importance of unity and collective effort in rebuilding the party.

This stakeholders’ meeting was the first since the party’s defeat in the 2023 elections, signaling a new beginning for the Abia State PDP as it prepares for future challenges.
