Why Atiku and Obi were Absent at Secretariat Unveiling – ADC
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has explained the absence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State governor Peter Obi at the unveiling of its new secretariat in Abuja on November 17.
In a statement, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, dismissed reports suggesting Obi snubbed the leadership because the secretariat was previously Atiku’s campaign office.
While ADC National Chairman David Mark, National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola, and former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai attended the unveiling, both Obi and Atiku were absent and did not issue formal statements.
Mark, inaugurating the new secretariat, described it as a symbol of the coalition’s ambition to reshape Nigeria’s political landscape. “It is a physical testament to our collective resolve to build a greater nation. This ADC coalition is a historic child of necessity, inspired by people’s desire for good governance, greater accountability, and a stronger democracy,” he said.
Abdullahi clarified that Obi’s absence was due to being out of the country, while Atiku had prior commitments. “The programme was impromptu; most party leaders were not in attendance. Obi was out of the country, and Atiku wasn’t available. There’s nothing to suggest that Peter Obi is withdrawing from the coalition. He is still with us,” he said.
He also emphasized that Atiku did not own or donate the building, explaining that the ADC had merely leased it after Atiku’s rental period expired.
The ADC further insisted that there is no rift among its leaders, affirming that the coalition remains united in its goal to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
