Zamfara Government Declares Parallel Assembly Illegal, Affirms Moriki-Led Legislature
The Zamfara State Government has condemned as illegal and unconstitutional the actions of a group of suspended lawmakers who recently convened a separate legislative sitting in Gusau.
The group, led by Bashar Aliyu (PDP–Gummi I), held a parallel assembly in defiance of the authority of the recognized Speaker of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, Bilyaminu Moriki (PDP–Zurmi South). During their session, the faction accused Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration of poor performance, particularly in the areas of security and infrastructure.
Reacting to the development during a press briefing in Gusau on Friday, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters, Iliyasu Maijega, dismissed the claims made by the faction as baseless and declared their activities null and void.
“There is only one legitimate Zamfara State House of Assembly, and it is under the leadership of Speaker Bilyaminu Moriki,” Maijega stated.
He condemned the move by the suspended lawmakers to form a parallel assembly, warning that their actions violate both the Nigerian Constitution and an existing court order.
“All the accusations made by the so-called parallel assembly against the current administration are unfounded and carry no legal weight,” he added.
Maijega urged the public to disregard any pronouncements or resolutions from the group, emphasizing that the matter is currently before the court. He cautioned that any lawmaker aligning with the breakaway faction is acting outside the law and risks further legal consequences.
