Abass Baraou Confirmed as New WBA Super-Welterweight Champion
Germany’s Abass Baraou has officially been elevated to WBA super-welterweight world champion, capping off a remarkable rise and marking a significant moment for German boxing.
Wasserman Boxing, Baraou’s promoter, confirmed the news on social media platform X, announcing that the 30-year-old (17–1, 9 KOs) now joins the elite company of German greats like Sven Ottke, Felix Sturm, and Arthur Abraham as recognised world champions in the modern era.
Baraou earned the WBA Interim 154-pound title with a career-defining victory over previously unbeaten Cuban Yoenis Tellez on August 23. Fighting on foreign soil at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida, Baraou battled through a closely contested fight, sealing the win with a final-round knockdown and earning a unanimous decision.
That win laid the groundwork for his elevation to full world champion status after Terence Crawford vacated the WBA belt by stepping up to defeat Canelo Alvarez on September 13 and become undisputed at super-middleweight. Crawford’s move ended his 13-month reign as the WBA super-welterweight titleholder, clearing the path for Baraou.
With his championship status confirmed, Baraou now stands among the current elite at 154 pounds, alongside:
-
Sebastian Fundora (WBC) – set to defend against Keith Thurman on October 25
-
Bakhram Murtazaliev (IBF) – potentially facing Britain’s Josh Kelly later this year
-
Xander Zayas (WBO) – awaiting confirmation for his first title defense
However, a major challenge already looms for Baraou. The WBA has named Jermell Charlo, its former undisputed champion and current “champion-in-recess,” as the mandatory challenger. Charlo has not fought since his disappointing showing against Canelo Alvarez at 168 pounds in September 2023, but remains a formidable figure in the division.
Baraou’s next move will be closely watched, as he aims to cement his place at the top of the stacked super-welterweight division and bring further glory to German boxing.
