Canelo Alvarez Asserts Legacy Remains Intact Despite Recent Defeat
Canelo Alvarez has remained defiant in the face of his latest defeat, reaffirming his commitment to legacy-driven fights after losing his super-middleweight crown to Terence Crawford. The Mexican star, now 63-3-2 (39 KOs), was outboxed over 12 rounds by Crawford in their highly anticipated clash at Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas.
Crawford, who moved up two weight classes for the challenge, delivered a brilliant performance to claim a unanimous decision victory, earning scorecards of 115-113 (twice) and 116-112. With the win, he improved his record to a perfect 42-0 (31 KOs), and seized Alvarez’s titles to become undisputed at 168 pounds.
Despite being outpointed, Canelo struck a philosophical tone post-fight, praising his opponent while defending his career choices.
“I’m here to take risks, that’s what I came here for,” Alvarez said. “My legacy is there and I’ll stay here. I’m happy to share the ring with great fighters like him. I’ve achieved a lot in boxing, and I’ve always taken the risks.”
He added, “I feel good, I feel strong. Crawford was a great fighter, but I feel the same as always. A defeat does not define me—I’ve already won. I’m happy, it was a great night for me. My career will continue.”
Alvarez also claimed his team executed the strategy they had planned, despite the result: “It was a great fight, everyone saw it. I prepared well, and we came out winners in our own way. The strategy was worked out like that—we did what was planned.”
Canelo’s future is now uncertain. Though he described facing Crawford as a “risk,” many viewed Alvarez as the heavy favorite going in, particularly with Crawford making a two-division leap to face him.
What lies ahead for the former four-division world champion remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Canelo remains undeterred in the pursuit of challenges that, win or lose, he believes will define his legacy.
