Mikaela Mayer Expresses Interest in Potential Bout with Katie Taylor
Two-weight world champion Mikaela Mayer has expressed her interest in facing Katie Taylor, potentially stepping in as the Irish star’s next opponent — or even for her farewell fight.
Mayer, 35, is preparing to fight in Canada for the first time in her career on October 30, when she challenges Mary Spencer for the WBA super-welterweight title. A win would see Mayer capture a world title in a third weight class, having previously held belts at super-featherweight and welterweight.
Meanwhile, Taylor, 39, recently vacated her WBC super-lightweight title, ending her reign as a two-weight undisputed champion. Currently on a personal hiatus, she has been designated “Champion-in-Recess” by the WBC — a status that allows her to return and fight for the title in the future.
The move elevated Chantelle Cameron, previously the interim titleholder, to full champion. Cameron and Taylor are tied 1-1 in their high-profile rivalry, and talks of a third bout continue to swirl.
Taylor has also long expressed a desire to fight at Dublin’s iconic Croke Park, a dream that remains unfulfilled — but one Mayer is eager to help realise.
“I’ve always wanted to fight Katie,” Mayer told Boxing News. “We’ve reached out to Matchroom [Taylor’s promoter]. They know we’re available for that fight. If she does want one more fight at Croke Park, I’m willing to go to Ireland to get that done.”
Mayer, with a record of 21 wins, 2 losses, and 5 KOs, said she respects whatever decision Taylor makes, including the possibility of retirement. “I know she’s mandated to fight Chantelle. I don’t know what she’s going to do, it’s up to her. I respect whatever decision she makes. I would love to be called upon for her final fight if that’s what she’s looking to do.”
Taylor, whose record stands at 25-1 (6 KOs), is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished female boxers in history, with decorated careers in both the amateur and professional ranks.
