This year’s European Championship culminates with a thrilling final between England and Spain.

England, often pre-tournament favorites, have a history of failing to meet expectations. Their last major title dates back to 1966, when they won the World Cup on home soil.

Under Gareth Southgate, the Three Lions have faced potential elimination multiple times during the knockout rounds but have managed to reach the final for the second consecutive tournament.

In contrast, Spain’s journey to the final was unexpected. Luis de la Fuente’s squad lacks big names but excels in playing as a cohesive unit. They have won all six matches at Euro 2024, setting a record for the most wins in the competition’s history.

“Spain has been the best team in the tournament, by a long stretch,” says Calvin Onwuka, CEO of ACL Sports, to NIGERIA NEWS 247. “Their ability to switch modes and styles during matches is impressive.”

England, despite their star-studded lineup, have often appeared less than the sum of their parts. Yet, they have managed to grind out results. “England are in the final. That’s about the only good thing to say about them, really,” Onwuka notes. “They had a brilliant 20 minutes in the semi-final, showing their quality, but couldn’t sustain it.”

Harry Kane and Dani Olmo lead the competition’s scoring charts with three goals each from six shots on target, while Jude Bellingham and Fabian Ruiz have two goals apiece. However, Onwuka believes Rodri will be the decisive player in the final at the Olympiastadion.

Ballon d’Or buzz surrounds the Manchester City midfielder. Despite City’s FA Cup final defeat ending a 74-game unbeaten run for Rodri, he has continued his winning form with Spain. “The fitness of Rodri is key. If he is not fit, England will not win,” Onwuka asserts.

While Spain have consistently impressed, England have had their ups and downs. The final promises to be a different affair altogether.

So, who will emerge victorious?

“I am unable to stick my neck out on this. Man for man, England have even better players than Spain do. But the Spanish are a better team. The best teams never win tournaments,” Onwuka concludes.
