Peter Rufai, former first-choice goalkeeper for Nigeria’s Super Eagles, has passed away at the age of 61. The legendary shot-stopper died on Thursday following a prolonged illness.

Fondly known as “Dodomayana,” Rufai was celebrated as one of Nigeria’s finest goalkeepers. Over a career spanning two decades, he played professionally across Europe, featuring for clubs in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain.

Rufai proudly represented Nigeria on the international stage, appearing in two FIFA World Cups and two Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments.

His death coincides with another tragic loss in the football community, as Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother were reportedly killed in a car accident in Spain earlier the same day.
