Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has sharply criticised the federal government following reports that the Super Eagles boycotted training ahead of Thursday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff against Gabon over unpaid allowances.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, Obi expressed disappointment that players who have “consistently given their best in representing our dear nation” are still owed their dues. He said:

“We always seem to find money to waste on needless lavish spending and political patronage, yet we cannot pay those who patriotically raise our flag… That is what is found in a now disgraced country.”

The former Anambra governor described the situation as shameful, warning that it sends a damaging message to young Nigerians that “hard work and service are not rewarded.” He urged authorities to resolve the matter swiftly and ensure that national athletes are treated with dignity.

“When those who serve their country are not treated with dignity, it sends the wrong message to our youth… We must do better,” Obi added.

The Super Eagles’ preparations were disrupted on Tuesday when players and backroom staff refused to train in Rabat, Morocco, over unpaid allowances and bonuses. Reports indicate that the protest stems from long-standing financial disputes with football authorities.

The standoff comes just two days before Nigeria’s crucial semi-final clash against Gabon in the Africa World Cup Playoff Tournament at the Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan Stadium, Rabat—a match pivotal for the nation’s bid to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
