WAFCON 2024: Ihezuo Fires Super Falcons into Quarter-Finals with Late Winner Against Botswana
Substitute Chiwendu Ihezuo scored a dramatic late winner as Nigeria’s Super Falcons edged Botswana 1-0 to book a spot in the quarter-finals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The match began with both sides vying for control, though Nigeria held a slight edge in possession. Botswana tested Nigeria early with a few long-range efforts, but failed to pose a real threat.
Nigeria’s first clear chance came in the 23rd minute when Ashleigh Plumptre fired off target after being teed up by Toni Payne. The Super Falcons continued to press, with Payne nearly breaking the deadlock nine minutes before halftime, but her effort lacked precision.
After a goalless first half, head coach Justine Madugu made three strategic changes—bringing on Esther Okoronkwo, Christy Ucheibe, and Chiwendu Ihezuo in place of Asisat Oshoala, Toni Payne, and Rinsola Babajide.
Despite the changes, Nigeria found it difficult to break down Botswana’s resilient defence. Jennifer Echegini came close 12 minutes from time, but the goal remained elusive.
The decisive moment arrived right on the 90-minute mark. Okoronkwo delivered a pinpoint cross into the box, which Ihezuo calmly slotted home to secure victory and send the Super Falcons into the last eight.
