Execution by Hanging

Iranian authorities on Wednesday executed three men convicted of collaborating with Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency and smuggling equipment used in an assassination, as part of an ongoing crackdown on alleged espionage tied to Israel.

The executions took place at dawn in Urmia Central Prison in northwest Iran, following final approval from the country’s Supreme Court. Iran’s judiciary-affiliated news agency, Mizan, identified the men as Idris Ali (son of Saleh), Azad Shojaei (son of Abdolrahman), and Rasoul Ahmad Rasoul (son of Ahmad).

According to officials, the men were accused of smuggling equipment used in the assassination of an unnamed high-profile individual inside Iran. Authorities claimed the items were covertly imported under the cover of an alcohol shipment, which allegedly facilitated the killing.

Though the identity of the assassination target was not disclosed, the judiciary stated that the operation was linked to Mossad’s broader efforts to destabilize Iran and target key national figures.

The three men were charged with moharebeh (waging war against God) and ifsad fil-arz (corruption on Earth), two of the most serious offenses under Iranian law. Authorities said the group had coordinated with a Mossad operative based in a neighboring country to smuggle the equipment into Iran.

Following their arrests by Iranian security forces, the men were tried in the Revolutionary Court of Urmia. The judiciary stated that legal representation was provided, with some defendants having two attorneys.

“The Revolutionary Court, based on substantial evidence and credible documents, found the individuals guilty of espionage, cooperation with hostile foreign entities, and actions against national security,” Mizan reported. The Supreme Court later upheld the convictions.

Iran has frequently accused Mossad of carrying out covert operations within its borders, including assassinations of nuclear scientists and sabotage of critical infrastructure. In recent years, several individuals have been executed in Iran on charges of spying for Israel, the United States, and other foreign states.

Wednesday’s executions signal a continued hardline stance by Tehran against perceived foreign interference. In a statement, the judiciary emphasized its firm response to acts of espionage and pledged to “protect national security with zero tolerance for betrayal.”
