The US has reportedly cautioned Iran that any retaliatory strike on Israel in response to the recent assassination of a senior Hamas leader in Tehran would pose a “significant threat” to Iran’s economy and government.

The US warned that such retaliation could further intensify the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Fox News, citing a US official in a report by The Wall Street Journal, mentioned that the US has informed Iran that the likelihood of a major escalation is “extremely high” if Iran pursues a retaliatory attack.

The official noted that Tehran has been warned of the “serious risk of consequences for Iran’s economy and the stability of its newly elected government” if it chooses that path.

It is noteworthy that Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran late last month. Israel was quickly blamed for the assassination after previously vowing to target Haniyeh and other Hamas leaders in response to the group’s October 7 attack, which resulted in 1,200 deaths and hundreds more being taken hostage.
