The tragic incident, occurring during Eid prayers, has sparked outrage and unrest among residents, leading to heightened tensions in the area.
Eyewitnesses reported that personnel from the NSCDC, in pursuit of suspected armed hoodlums, fired indiscriminately, resulting in the tragic death of an innocent woman.
In response, an angry mob gathered and set fire to an NSCDC vehicle in protest of the incident. Confirming the incident to Channels Television via telephone conversation, ASP Yazid Abubakar, spokesperson of the Nigerian Police in Zamfara State, stated that two NSCDC personnel linked to the shooting are currently in police custody. The Zamfara State Police command is investigating the cause of the incident.
When contacted, NSCDC spokesperson in Zamfara State, Ikor Oche, denied allegations that NSCDC personnel shot the victim. He stated that the NSCDC personnel were stationed at their post, observing movements of Muslim faithful attending Eid prayers when they heard gunshots. They responded to the scene and found a woman with a gunshot wound.
