The Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal in Abuja has mandated the posting of its interim order, which restrains MultiChoice Nigeria Limited from raising DSTV tariffs, at the company’s corporate headquarters and other branches nationwide.
Chairman of the tribunal, Saratu Shafii, issued the order on April 29, 2024, directing that the document be prominently displayed at MultiChoice’s known email address, social media platforms, and other public communication channels.
The interim order was granted in response to a petition by Abuja-based lawyer, Festus Onifade, opposing MultiChoice’s plans to hike tariffs on its DStv and Gotv packages from May 1. Onifade sought an injunction to halt the price increase pending further legal proceedings.
Efforts to serve MultiChoice with the tribunal’s order were reportedly rebuffed by staff at the company’s Abuja office, prompting the tribunal to issue a directive for substituted service. This involves posting the order at MultiChoice’s corporate headquarters, branches, and online platforms, in accordance with relevant legal provisions.
