Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group and one of Africa’s leading industrialists, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to protect Nigeria’s local industries by placing refined petroleum products on the list of items restricted under the Federal Government’s ‘Nigeria First’ policy.

Speaking at a recent stakeholders’ meeting, Dangote emphasized that restricting the importation of refined fuels such as petrol, diesel, and aviation fuel would significantly boost local production, preserve foreign exchange, and generate employment.

He pointed to the newly commissioned Dangote Refinery—which has the capacity to meet Nigeria’s entire domestic demand for refined petroleum products—as a strategic national asset. According to him, continued reliance on imported fuel not only undermines local investments but also weakens the country’s push for economic independence.

“Including refined petroleum products in the import restriction list would send a clear message that the government is committed to industrialization and energy self-sufficiency,” Dangote stated.

His appeal aligns with the objectives of the ‘Nigeria First’ policy, which is aimed at promoting local content, encouraging domestic production, and strengthening economic resilience.

If adopted, the proposal could significantly reshape Nigeria’s energy sector by accelerating the shift from import dependence to self-reliance. However, industry analysts remain divided: while some welcome the move as a long-overdue step toward industrial growth, others warn that the country must ensure consistent supply, price stability, and supporting infrastructure before such a policy is enacted.
