NARTO backs NUPENG to shut down petrol distribution nationwide
The Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) has thrown its weight behind the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) as the union prepares to halt fuel distribution across the country on Monday, September 8.
NUPENG announced the planned strike over alleged anti-labour practices by Dangote Refinery, particularly its decision to deploy 4,000 compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks—reportedly aimed at replacing unionized drivers.
In a statement released on Sunday, NARTO President Yusuf Lawal Othman condemned the move, describing it as a deliberate attempt to edge out thousands of independent transporters and undermine fair competition in the downstream oil and gas sector.
“NARTO strongly and unequivocally rejects the planned distribution of petroleum products by Dangote Refinery,” the statement read. “This is a clear threat to the thousands of independent operators who form the backbone of Nigeria’s petroleum logistics chain.”
NARTO emphasized that its members currently operate over 30,000 trucks nationwide, employing a significant workforce that supports millions of dependents and is backed by substantial financial commitments from banks, marketers, and depot owners.
The association urged the Federal Government, relevant agencies, the Office of the National Security Adviser, and the Dangote Group to initiate immediate dialogue with all stakeholders.
“We are not against investment or industrial development,” the statement continued, “but we oppose monopolistic practices that endanger jobs, compromise national security, and threaten the Nigerian economy.”
NARTO reaffirmed its full support for NUPENG’s actions and called for a fair and inclusive resolution that ensures sustainable competition and protects the livelihoods of petroleum transport workers across the country.
