He continued, “The job is straightforward. They just need to be law-abiding, adhere to the profession’s ethics, and follow the established rules and regulations. They only need to do the right thing consistently.”

Shofoluye emphasized the importance of leadership, teamwork, and treating both staff and students with respect and care. He underscored the necessity for principals to build strong relationships with community leaders, parents, and other stakeholders. “As long as they do this, they can be confident they will not encounter any problems,” he added.

Anike Adeponye, the Tutor General/Permanent Secretary of Education District 2, also spoke at the event, expressing gratitude to Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu for approving the appointments. She thanked the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education in Lagos State, Mr. Jamiu Ali Balogun, and other stakeholders for their support. Adeponye advised the new principals to be mindful of the laws and regulations outlined in the public service booklet and to act with integrity, ensuring fairness to all parties involved, including the governor, commissioner, TGPS, parents, and students.

Mr. Olushola Maseyi, President of ANCOPSS Lagos State, highlighted the importance of learning and experience in the role of a principal. He stated, “In every profession, you must learn the ethics and ethos of that profession. Being appointed a principal requires learning the ropes. It is not something you can fully grasp from a classroom; firsthand experience is essential.”

Maseyi praised the training provided at the induction, noting, “This type of training is part of the accumulated experiences we have as principals. It has greatly improved the newly appointed principals, and we will soon see positive changes in their approach to work and how they handle issues in their schools, benefiting education in Lagos State.”

Dr. Maria Eko, Chairperson of the Induction Committee and Principal of Vetland Senior Grammar School, Oko Oba, Agege, discussed the qualities expected in a principal. She said, “We are looking for leaders who are resourceful, creative, innovative, and can think outside the box—a 21st-century leader who can work under pressure. Lagos State has invested heavily in education, seeking results in the form of resourceful students capable of changing the narrative. By God’s grace, these leaders are up to the task.”
