Representatives of the Federal Government and the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) are currently in a closed-door meeting to address lingering issues and avert a planned strike by the union.

The meeting, which began around 4:30 pm, is being held in the office of the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman. Also present on the Federal Government team are the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, and other top ministry officials.

ASUU President, Emmanuel Osodeke, leading the union’s delegation, informed newsmen that the meeting aims to discuss unresolved issues affecting universities to prevent the planned strike.

“There are many outstanding issues within the system that we believe should have been addressed by now,” Osodeke said. “These issues should have been resolved in line with President Bola Tinubu’s promise that there will be no strike in the university system. We hope this meeting will resolve some of these issues so we can move forward as a country and in our university system.”

Earlier, Education Minister Mamman stated that the meeting provides an opportunity for both parties to discuss and resolve the issues affecting the university system. Mamman noted that ASUU had previously written to the Ministry, outlining various concerns that required interaction with government officials to potentially avert the proposed strike.

As of the time of filing this report, the closed-door meeting is still ongoing.

ASUU has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike due to the Federal Government’s failure to meet its demands, giving the government a two-week deadline to address the issues.
