ASUU Awards N400,000 Scholarship to Indigent Students from Ebonyi
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) awarded scholarship grants totaling N200,000 each to two final-year students of Medicine and Surgery at Ebonyi State University Abakaliki. Dr. Okechukwu Igwenyi, Chairman of ASUU Ebonyi State University chapter, presented the cheques to Ms. Onwe Emmanuella C. and Chukwuemeka Ogar P., emphasizing that the beneficiaries were selected based on rigorous and transparent criteria. He underscored ASUU’s commitment beyond industrial actions, highlighting their annual scholarship awards aimed at supporting indigent students across Nigerian public universities.
Igwenyi lamented the exorbitant cost of education, which has pushed many students to the brink of dropping out due to financial constraints. He expressed concerns over student welfare, security challenges, and the economic hardships facing students and their families. He also noted ASUU’s ongoing efforts to provide research grants and scholarships, including a Ph.D. Research Grant and corporate social responsibility initiatives funded through check-off deductions.
Ms. Onwe Emmanuella expressed her joy and relief upon receiving the scholarship, noting that it would enable her to settle her overdue school fees and cover other academic expenses. Similarly, Chukwuemeka Ogar Peter expressed deep gratitude to ASUU-EBSU, believing that the grant would significantly alleviate his financial burdens and support his educational pursuits.
