BREAKING: Education Minister Faces Backlash as 2024 Admission Age Set at 18
Stakeholders at the 2024 Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) policy meeting reacted strongly when Minister of Education, Prof Mamman Tahir, announced that candidates must be 18 years old or above to seek admission into higher institutions.
Following the Minister’s directive, the crowd voiced their dissent with chants of “no, no, no.” However, Tahir maintained that this policy aligns with the government’s stance, emphasizing that candidates are expected to be more mature at 18.
He suggested that anyone opposed to the policy could seek amendment through the National Assembly.
The JAMB policy meeting, held annually, convenes stakeholders from various tertiary institutions to determine admission cut-off marks for the academic year.
Previously, Mamman criticized the practice of admitting immature students into higher institutions, which he believes exposes them to negative influences.
