Ebonyi Govt Cracks Down on Illegal Schools, Arrests 88 Proprietors and Teachers
The Ebonyi State Government has stepped up efforts to eliminate substandard education by arresting 88 proprietors and teachers operating unapproved and illegal schools across the state.
This move follows a comprehensive inspection carried out by the Ministry of Education, which revealed numerous schools functioning without proper accreditation.
Many of these institutions were found lacking qualified staff, adequate facilities, and approved curricula, leading authorities to order their immediate closure.
Addressing journalists in Abakaliki on Thursday, the Commissioner for Education (Primary and Secondary), Dr. Donatus Illang, emphasized the importance of the crackdown in protecting the educational future of the state’s children.
“We cannot compromise the future of our children,” Dr. Illang stated firmly. “These schools pose a serious threat to the integrity of our education system as they do not meet minimum standards.”
Those arrested are currently under investigation, with legal proceedings anticipated soon. The commissioner also issued a strong warning to other proprietors violating education regulations, affirming that the government will take decisive action against offenders.
Dr. Illang encouraged parents to confirm the accreditation status of schools before enrolling their children and urged communities to report any suspected illegal learning centers.
To support legitimate schools, the state government has introduced initiatives including teacher training programs and infrastructure support to help institutions meet compliance requirements.
Reiterating the administration’s dedication, the commissioner affirmed that every child in Ebonyi deserves access to quality education within a safe and well-regulated environment.
