Idah Poly Rector Calls for BTech Degree for Polytechnic Graduates
Prof. Yahaya Usman, Rector of Federal Polytechnic Idah, advocated for the adoption of a Bachelor of Technology (BTech) degree for polytechnic graduates nationwide during the Nigeria Education Merit Award Platform (NEMWP) held in Lokoja on Saturday.
According to Prof. Usman, introducing the BTech degree would effectively address the longstanding dichotomy between polytechnic and university qualifications in Nigeria.
“We are proposing that Polytechnic graduates be conferred with a Bachelor of Technology (BTech) degree, which would phase out the Higher National Diploma (HND) certificate. Under this proposal, the National Diploma (ND) would remain the foundational qualification,” he explained optimistically.
He expressed gratitude to governments at all levels for their efforts in ensuring effective delivery of polytechnic education aligned with its core objectives.
Prof. Usman also highlighted the significant strides made by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) in promoting skills acquisition among students. He emphasized the shift towards enhancing technological development through specialized certifications in various skill areas.
“This initiative aims to equip our graduates with practical skills that meet industry demands. Instead of relying on foreign expertise for tasks like welding, our graduates will be competent to fill such roles and even export their skills abroad, thus contributing to our national economy,” he remarked.
Looking ahead, Prof. Usman envisioned a future where Nigerian youth, armed with diversified skills and certifications, would thrive in both traditional and emerging job markets, thereby mitigating widespread unemployment.
