JAMB 2024: 6 Reasons Why UTME Candidates with Scores of 300 and Above May Not Secure Admission
There are several reasons why jambites who scored 300 and above may struggle to get admission in Nigeria tertiary institutions. Some of this reasons are not far fetched.
Nature of course applied, high level of completion and choice of Institution may influence the chances of securing admission in Nigeria Universities.
6 Most Common Reasons Are Listed Below:
1. Course Competitiveness: High-demand courses like medicine, law, and engineering often have more applicants than available slots. Even with a high score, candidates might not make the cut due to the intense competition
2. Institutional Cut-off Marks: Different universities set their own cut-off marks for various courses. A score of 300 might not meet the specific cut-off for a highly sought-after program at a prestigious institution.
3. Capacity Limitations: Each program has a limited number of slots. If the number of high-scoring candidates exceeds the capacity, some will inevitably be left out despite their high marks.
4. Ranking Order: Universities often rank applicants based on their UTME scores and other criteria. A candidate with a score of 320 could still be ranked lower than other applicants and miss out on admission.
5. Quota System: Some institutions have quotas for different categories of students (e.g., state of origin, catchment area, etc.). This can affect admission decisions regardless of high scores.
6. Specific Departmental Requirements: Beyond the overall UTME score, some departments may have additional requirements such as subject-specific scores or prerequisites that candidates must meet.
