Oluranti Okeowo, the Director of Maximus Academy in Arepo, Ogun State, expressed concern over the rising insecurity in the country and its impact on basic education. She highlighted that the insecurity has particularly affected extracurricular activities in secondary schools.

During an interview with the Nigeria News 247 at the school’s 2024 Graduation and Prize Giving Day celebration in Arepo, Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area, Ogun State, Okeowo explained that due to increasing cases of insecurity, students can no longer participate in excursions that would enhance their knowledge and academic development.

Okeowo emphasized the need for the government to review certain policies, especially amid the challenging economic conditions affecting businesses in the country. She stated, “There are many challenges facing private schools and education in Nigeria. One of such is the issue of insecurity, which has affected extracurricular activities. For instance, school children can no longer go on excursions, which help them develop beyond the classroom. We cannot take children on excursions because of the fear of the unknown.”

She also addressed issues related to government policies, noting that the Land Use Act and the taxes imposed on private schools need to be reconsidered, as private schools play a significant role in supporting the government’s educational objectives. Okeowo called for government subsidies to help private schools sustain their contributions to the country’s educational development.

Reflecting on the achievements of the graduating students, Okeowo proudly mentioned the school’s excellent performance in external examinations and local and state competitions. She congratulated the graduates, encouraging them to uphold the values instilled in them by the school.

She remarked, “We believe in your potential to make a significant impact on the world. As you embark on new adventures, always remember the values you have learned here and never stop reaching for the stars. You have demonstrated resilience, creativity, and the ability to overcome challenges. As you move forward into the next chapter of your academic journey, we do not doubt that you will continue to shine brightly and make a positive difference in the world.”
