NBTE suspends contentious new service scheme for polytechnics
The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has suspended the implementation of the newly revised scheme of service for polytechnics in the country.
According to NIGERIA NEWS 247, the suspension follows a warning strike by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), whose ultimatum to the Federal Government to withdraw the scheme ends on Monday.
ASUP had criticized certain aspects of the scheme and called for its withdrawal.
The suspension was announced in a circular dated July 19, 2024, signed by the board’s Executive Secretary, Professor Idris Bugaje.
The circular, addressed to the Governing Council, Rectors, and Provosts of federal and state polytechnics, was made available to NIGERIA NEWS 247 in Ilorin on Friday.
It stated in part: “Further to the many issues raised regarding the June 2024 schemes of service previously circulated, I wish to convey approval for the suspension of implementation until all grey areas are addressed.”
