Professor Florence Obi, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, has announced plans to bring in psychologists to support over 300 dentistry students who are currently unable to continue their education. This situation stems from an over-enrollment issue that predates Professor Obi’s administration, which is set to conclude by the end of the year.

The circumstances have led to significant distress among the affected students, with some reportedly experiencing depression and a few even considering suicide. In response, the university proposed transferring these students to 13 other institutions that offer similar dental programs. However, the students have firmly rejected this option.

In a widely circulated video, the students expressed their preference for being integrated into the surgery and medicine department rather than facing the financial burdens and uncertainties associated with transferring schools, including the risk of having to repeat a year.

The Nigerian Association of Dental Students, represented by its leader Victory Ochuwa, has urged the University of Calabar to reconsider its plans to avoid escalating tensions and mental health issues among the students.

During a press briefing at her office, Vice Chancellor Obi emphasized the university’s commitment to prioritizing student welfare and stated that efforts to communicate with both students and their families regarding the ongoing challenges are underway.

“We acknowledge reports of a student contemplating suicide, which is deeply concerning and unfortunate,” she remarked. “We are open to the idea of engaging psychologists to assist in addressing the emotional needs of these students.”

Professor Obi assured that the suggestion would be taken into consideration as the university collaborates with government officials and other stakeholders. “Before I conclude my tenure, I will ensure that this issue and others are adequately addressed,” she added.
