UNN Investigates Death of First-Year Student Found in Campus Drainage

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in Enugu State, is working with state security operatives to investigate the death of Favour Okenyi, a first-year student whose body was found in a campus drainage. The acting Public Relations Officer, Okwun Omeaku, revealed this in a statement obtained by NIGERIA NEWS 247 on Monday.

Okenyi, a student in the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, was reported missing after attending a chemistry practical. Her body was discovered near the Eni Njoku male hostel, by the university’s stadium junction, on Friday evening. Videos and photos of the scene have been circulating on social media.

Omeaku described the incident as shocking and offered condolences to Okenyi’s family. He emphasized that the university is cooperating with security agencies to prevent future occurrences.

“The university community was shocked on Friday, July 5, by the distressing discovery of a lifeless body found in a drainage near the Akanu Ibiam Stadium, UNN. The university administration is deeply saddened by the loss of our student and extends heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased for the tragic death of such a promising young student. The management is collaborating with security agencies and the family of the deceased to uncover the circumstances surrounding her death and to prevent any potential recurrence of such incidents in the future.”

Omeaku added that an investigation is underway to identify and arrest those responsible. When contacted on Sunday for a response, state Police Public Relations Officer Daniel Ndukwe requested a text message, but did not respond to repeated calls and messages sent on Sunday and Monday.
