“False portrayal in viral video devastated my career,” reveals Hanks Anuk
Nollywood icon, Hanks Anuku, has opened up about the detrimental impact of a viral video that falsely depicted him as mentally unstable, both on his career and mental well-being.
The distressing video, which surfaced online in 2022, portrayed Anuku in ragged attire, seemingly engaged in a solitary conversation, leading to unfounded assumptions about his mental health.
Despite clarifications from fellow industry figure Shan George, assertions from others, including filmmaker Adanma Luke, persisted, prompting the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) to launch an investigation.
In his first discussion addressing the incident, Anuku disclosed to content creator Lucky Udu that the footage was a scene from a movie set, manipulated by individuals seeking to besmirch his reputation.
He revealed the profound personal anguish inflicted by the video, recounting the loss of friendships and professional opportunities, as he was ostracized by filmmakers and faced financial setbacks.
Anuku explained that he was merely immersing himself in character preparation for a role as a mentally unstable individual, following the director’s instructions.
The fallout from the video left him isolated and struggling, deprived of work and support. Yet, he expressed gratitude for encountering individuals who offered kindness amid the turmoil, emphasizing the emotional toll the ordeal exacted.
