Nigerian singer Oludipe David, widely known as Spyro, has expressed concern that contemporary music has “lost its intrinsic value.”

Spyro, an outspoken advocate for conscious and message-driven music, argued that the disappearance of value-based songwriting has played a major role in the moral decline seen in today’s society.

Speaking on the Adesope Live show, he said: “In the past, artists were passing meaningful messages regardless of whatever genre they were doing. But now, music is just vibes. We are just vibing.”

While acknowledging that feel-good music has its place, Spyro insisted that the industry must find a balance. “Vibes are cool, but I feel like music has lost its intrinsic value. Back then, you would get goosebumps listening to music. Vibes are cool — but how can we infuse messages and values into vibes?”

He added that many artists today are more focused on financial gain than impact: “A lot of the decadence we see in society today can be traced to the fact that music has lost its value. We are now just singing for money. A lot of us are in the business for money, not to make impact.”
