Nicki Minaj Urges Fans to Show Greater Support and Patience Toward Nigerian Artistes
US rapper Nicki Minaj has urged fans to show more understanding and patience toward Nigerian artistes.
The call comes amid heightened criticism of Nigerian performers this week. Burna Boy faced backlash after jokingly stating that he wants “only rich fans,” while Yemi Alade was criticized for opposing suggestions of American intervention in Nigeria’s escalating insecurity.
Other celebrities also drew scrutiny for appearing “insensitive” to recent tragedies, including the deadly church attack in Kwara State and the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State, after sharing posts unrelated to the incidents on social media.
Responding to the criticism, Minaj encouraged fans to approach Nigerian artistes with empathy and comprehension rather than judgment.
On her X handle, she wrote: “My darlings, let’s utilize wisdom & compassion as it relates to our Nigerian artists. There are very logical reasons for most things when we look not to judge, but to comprehend. That goes for every country & their artists. Let’s lift them up & continue to use wisdom.”
Minaj recently received praise from Nigerians after speaking against jihadist violence targeting Christians in Nigeria during a United Nations event in New York. In her speech, she called for urgent action against terrorists and emphasized the importance of freedom of worship.
