Seun Kuti, Grammy-nominated Afrobeat musician and inheritor of the Egypt 80 band from his late father Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, made a bold declaration in a recent interview with City 105.1 FM.

He asserted that Egypt 80 stands as Africa’s most successful band, emphasizing his prominent role as its frontman. Kuti expressed a fearless stance in society, asserting his freedom to voice opinions without intimidation from cultural norms. He criticized African media and award organizers for allegedly overlooking his music.

Kuti stated defiantly, “I will continue to speak my mind without fear of repercussions. What can you do to me? Refuse to play my videos? Isn’t that already happening? So what’s next?”

Highlighting his frustration, he pointed out, “Even after my Grammy nomination, no African award organization recognized my band in any category. Yet, I lead Africa’s most successful band with 54 albums, soon to be 55 with my next release.”

He lamented the lack of African recognition for Egypt 80, describing it as an institution that deserves national acclaim to inspire Africans worldwide.
