Minister of Works Accuses Peter Obi of Inciting Southeast Against Govt Over Coastal Road Project
Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has accused former presidential candidate Peter Obi of inciting the people of the southeast, particularly those who are not well-informed, against the government’s actions regarding the Lagos-Calabar coastal road project.
Umahi made these remarks during an event organized by the Federal Ministry of Works to compensate property owners affected by the project.
The coastal highway project, spanning 700 kilometers, has faced controversy due to the demolition of Landmark Beach Resort, valued at $200 million, to create a right of way. This action has sparked concerns about livelihoods and job losses.
Peter Obi criticized the government for proceeding with the project despite public outcry, emphasizing the need to prioritize national security, poverty eradication, healthcare, and education. He condemned the demolition of businesses and residences in the project’s designated right of way as insensitive and detrimental to livelihoods.
However, Umahi defended the government’s actions, stating that Landmark’s infrastructure was spared, and efforts were made to minimize the impact on affected parties. He accused Obi of spreading misinformation and inciting unrest among the people.
Umahi emphasized the importance of wisdom in understanding complex issues and urged people not to be misled by politicians seeking to exploit the situation for their gain. He stressed that the government acted with compassion and made efforts to address concerns raised by affected individuals.
