NARD Strike: Kogi NMA Chairman Hassan Blames Insecurity for Surge in Doctor Exodus
Dr. Abubakar Hassan, Kogi State Chairman of the NMA, expressed these concerns in an interview with NIGERIA NEWS 247 on Friday in Lokoja, commenting on the nationwide strike by the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD). He lamented that medical professionals have increasingly become targets for criminals despite their dedication to public service.
Hassan highlighted the severe impact on health services nationwide, noting that Kogi State has not been spared. He shared that the situation has reached a dire state, with many doctors falling victim to kidnappings.
He stated, “Dr. Ganiya is not the only one in captivity. There are numerous other cases that remain unreported. For instance, in one North Central State, at least two doctors are currently held captive—one for over a year, and another who was recently kidnapped just a week ago. This issue is widespread across the country.”
Hassan described the grim reality faced by doctors who, after enduring kidnappings and other criminal acts, often require medical care themselves, suffering both physical injuries and psychological trauma. He pointed out that doctors are increasingly becoming patients due to these ordeals.
“This ongoing threat is a significant factor driving the mass exodus of doctors from Nigeria. The allure of practicing in other African countries is growing stronger for Nigerian doctors,” he added. “Even with a high salary, if one cannot ensure their safety and movement, the anxiety and stress become overwhelming.”
Dr. Jimoh Umar, President of the Association of Resident Doctors at the Federal Teaching Hospital in Lokoja, confirmed full compliance with the warning strike in Kogi State. He also urged the government to urgently address the security concerns affecting medical professionals.
