Former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd.), and other Northern leaders on Saturday emphasized the need for renewed unity and stronger action against insecurity as the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) marked its 25th anniversary.

Represented by former Vice President Namadi Sambo, Gowon highlighted that peace and cohesion are critical to the region’s stability, warning that extremists continue to exploit divisions within Northern communities. He recalled that the ACF was established to promote moderation and unity, urging leaders to reinforce these values across the region.

ACF Board of Trustees Chairman Bashir Dalhatu noted that insecurity had worsened, citing frequent attacks, abductions, and the recent killing of a senior military officer. He also warned that the closure of many boarding schools due to insecurity threatens the future of Northern children and called for stronger cooperation among traditional rulers, state governments, and security agencies.

Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, represented by his deputy Dr. Hadiza Balarabe, reiterated the state’s commitment to peace and community engagement. She highlighted that improved intelligence coordination had contributed to a reduction in security incidents and encouraged farmers to return to their farms.

Northern leaders at the event stressed that the region’s progress depends on unity, effective security operations, and long-term investment in citizens. They reaffirmed the ACF’s role in guiding discussions on peace, development, and stability in the North.
