Yoruba socio-cultural group Afenifere has warned that Nigeria is facing its most severe security challenges since independence. The group’s leader, Reuben Fasoranti, made the remarks at the 25th anniversary of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) in Kaduna.

Fasoranti highlighted the country’s struggle with escalating violence, declining public trust, and weakening social cohesion. He urged Northern and Southern leaders to form urgent partnerships to address the rising insecurity and growing mistrust.

Describing the ACF Silver Jubilee as a moment for reflection, Fasoranti commended the forum for 25 years of service, noting its role as a stabilizing voice for the North and a platform for national dialogue, unity, and cohesion. “We have never faced this level of insecurity… This is a sad moment for our country. The founders of ACF sought to create a platform where Northern Nigeria’s voice could be expressed with clarity, responsibility, and dignity,” he said.

While expressing concerns about security, Fasoranti expressed confidence in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership, asserting that the “Renewed Hope Agenda” could help steer the country toward stability.

“Our challenges, though immense and complex, are not insurmountable. What is required is sincerity of purpose, courageous leadership, and a renewed commitment to fairness and justice,” he said, calling on Northern and Southern leaders to strengthen cross-regional cooperation grounded in mutual respect and shared responsibility.

Fasoranti also urged a revisiting of Nigeria’s foundational debates between 1953 and 1966, stressing that historical reflection is necessary to address current insecurity and safeguard the nation’s future.
