Over 3,000 Displaced by Violent Attacks in Yelwa, Benue State — Minister of Humanitarian Affairs
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, has reported that violent attacks in Yelwa community, Benue State, have displaced at least 3,160 people. The deadly violence has forced many residents to flee their homes, heightening tensions in the region and creating an urgent humanitarian crisis.
Prof. Yilwatda revealed that the displaced individuals are currently housed in temporary camps and host communities, where they face critical challenges including inadequate shelter, food scarcity, and limited healthcare access. The Ministry is actively coordinating with local and international partners to deliver emergency aid—ranging from food and medical supplies to psychosocial support—to ease the suffering of those affected.
The escalating situation in Benue has attracted national concern, prompting calls for enhanced security measures to protect vulnerable populations and prevent further violence. The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing the underlying causes of the conflict through dialogue and sustainable development initiatives. Meanwhile, humanitarian organizations continue to seek additional resources to meet the growing needs of the displaced community in Yelwa.
