The Ebonyi State Government has initiated the process of paying gratuities to retired local government workers dating back to 1996.

Governor Francis Nwifuru has inaugurated a six-member verification committee, chaired by Mrs. Catherine Ogbu, tasked with identifying and ensuring genuine retirees receive their entitlements.

The committee also includes Mrs. Mbam Joy, Dr. Cajethan Oketa, Hon. Justice Iheanachor Chima, Comrade David Elom (representing the Nigerian Union of Teachers), with Mr. Martins Uguru appointed as Secretary.

Governor Nwifuru urged the committee to carry out its duties with utmost transparency and fairness.

“I have confidence in the calibre of persons selected for this assignment. Everyone who served at the local government level deserves to receive their full entitlements,” he said.

He added that while funds may be limited, paying retirees is as crucial as executing physical development projects.

The directive, contained in a statement issued on Friday by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Monday Uzor, also emphasized that payments should be made promptly.

“Every retiree should be paid on the same day they are verified. Use available documents to guide the process, and ensure retirees receive alerts immediately upon confirmation,” Governor Nwifuru instructed.

The Governor also commended Local Government Chairmen for their cooperation and commitment to the exercise.
