EFCC Convicts 60 as Internet Fraud Cases Surge in Rivers
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has successfully prosecuted approximately 60 individuals for financial offenses in Rivers State this year.
The anti-graft agency highlighted internet fraud as the most prevalent among the convictions and ongoing criminal investigations, urging the public to provide valuable information to support its operations.
This disclosure came during an Anti-Corruption walk in Port Harcourt, organized by the Port Harcourt Zonal Command of the EFCC in collaboration with Civil Society Organizations, Sister Security Agencies, and Relief International Africa, to commemorate the 2024 African Union Anti-Corruption Day themed “Effective Whistleblower Protection Mechanism, A Critical Tool in the Fight against Corruption.”
Adebayo Adeniyi, the Acting Zonal Director of EFCC, Port Harcourt Zonal Directorate, emphasized that combating oil theft is a unique challenge in the state, contributing significantly to criminal activities.
“In my three months here, coming from Abuja, I’ve observed that the criminal landscape here is distinct due to activities like bunkering, which are not prevalent in Abuja,” Adeniyi remarked.
He further stated, “This year alone, we’ve achieved convictions of over 60 individuals facing corruption charges, with internet fraud being particularly prominent.”
Adeniyi continued, “We have numerous ongoing prosecutions and investigations due to the high incidence of crime. Our legal and operational departments are working diligently.”
Reflecting on the significance of whistleblowers, Adeniyi noted, “Awareness about whistleblowing is crucial. We want the public to feel safe providing us with information. Internet fraud remains a major concern due to the propensity of youth involvement, prompting our intensified efforts to combat it.”
In conclusion, Adeniyi affirmed, “Today’s campaign aims to raise awareness and encourage public engagement in reporting criminal activities. Effective communication is vital to our collective efforts in reducing crime.”
