Gov Oyebanji Approves New Retirement Age and Service Extension for Ekiti Teachers
Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State has approved the immediate extension of the retirement age for teachers from 60 to 65 years, and an increase in their years of service from 35 to 40 years.
The announcement was made on Sunday during the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration held at the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion in Ado-Ekiti.
As part of broader reforms to enhance the education sector and reward excellence, Governor Oyebanji also presented cash prizes totaling N46 million to outstanding teachers across the state.
He described the policy shift as a strategic measure to retain experienced educators, preserve institutional knowledge, and strengthen classroom performance. To ensure proper implementation, a special committee will be established to assess eligibility, focusing on teachers who are physically and mentally fit.
In further support of teacher welfare, the governor also announced:
-
An upward review of allowances for Science Teachers and Heads of Departments.
-
The immediate payment of the 2019 leave bonus arrears owed to teachers.
“Teachers are the foundation upon which the future of our state is built,” Oyebanji said. “This initiative aligns with our Shared Prosperity Agenda and reflects our commitment to improving teacher welfare while motivating them to continue shaping the next generation.”
