NAN reports that on August 1, the first day of the protest, police arrested 50 protesters across four different Local Government Areas for allegedly attacking officers and looting. Among those detained, 25 were arrested in Lafia, 16 in Karu, six in Keffi, and three in Mararaba Udege, located in Nasarawa Local Government Area.
Nansel revealed that “10 minors out of the 50 protesters were released to their parents and guardians,” while the remaining 40 have been charged in court.
The police spokesperson encouraged the public to continue with their lawful activities without fear of intimidation.
NIGERIA NEWS 247 notes that the protest, which began on Thursday, August 1, was sparked by widespread public dissatisfaction with the current economic and social conditions in Nigeria. Demonstrators across the country demanded reforms and greater accountability.
In response to the unrest, President Bola Tinubu called for patience with his policies and urged citizens not to let hoodlums exploit the situation.
The protest highlighted the nation’s strong desire for change and the importance of peaceful and constructive dialogue.
