Immigration Officer Jailed for N800,000 Scam

The Gombe State High Court has sentenced Immigration officer Dabiet Onyemi Gilbert to one year in prison for defrauding a job seeker of N800,000.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) prosecuted Gilbert on a one-count charge of obtaining money by false pretence. The EFCC initiated the case following a petition from the victim and subsequent investigation, which led to Gilbert’s prosecution and conviction.

Justice H.H. Kereng of the State High Court delivered the sentence.

In a related case, Justice Muazu Abubakar of the Bauchi State High Court sentenced Saleh Haruna to five years in prison for forgery and intent to defraud. Haruna conspired with Mohammed Mustapha Sallah to defraud a victim of N950,000 by posing as a land seller.

The EFCC has also arraigned Sallah on a three-count charge of conspiracy, forgery, and intent to defraud. His case has been adjourned until July 8, 2024, for hearing.
