Jigawa State Government Establishes Peace and Reconciliation Committees Amid Farmers and Herders Crisis

The Secretary to the Government of Jigawa State (SSG), Malam Bala Ibrahim, has launched peace and reconciliation committees aimed at fostering harmonious relations between farmers and herders in Janwawa and Bagadaza communities within Birnin Kudu and Gwaram Local Government Areas.

During the inauguration, the SSG emphasized that the establishment of these committees underscores the commitment of Governor Umar Namadi’s administration to promoting peace and stability among all citizens of the state.

He outlined the committees’ mandates, which include ensuring equitable allocation of farmlands, demarcating livestock routes, and establishing grazing reserves. Additionally, the committees are tasked with educating both farmers and herders on their societal contributions and encouraging peaceful coexistence.

Furthermore, the SSG highlighted the committees’ role in facilitating amicable resolutions to disputes between farmers and herders, ensuring that farmers refrain from encroaching on existing pathways leading to streams, rivers, and other essential water sources used by livestock.

Responding on behalf of both committees, Alhaji Ado Ahmed, Chairman of the Janwawa Committee in Sundumina District, and Jakadan Sulhu Dutse, expressed gratitude for their appointments. He pledged the committees’ commitment to diligently fulfill their responsibilities and justify the trust placed in them.

The Janwawa Committee in Sundumina District includes members such as Alhaji Ado Ahmed (Chairman), Jakadan Sulhu Dutse, Fulani Shehu, Sale Babba, Adamu Janwawa, Amadu Jangari, Alhaji Shehu Gwauraki Salisu, Abdulrahman Aliyu Safa, Alhaji Adamu Garin Kadanaya, along with representatives from security agencies, the Farmers and Herdsmen Board, and the local government council.

Similarly, the Bagadaza Committee in Fagam District includes members like Honourable Ada Yakubu Zandam (Chairman), Musa Isah Bagadaza, Ya’u Haruna, Musa Maijama’a, Alhaji Abdu Salihawa, Maikudi Shanu, Isyaku Alhaji Musa, Sule Aliyu Sarkin Kasuwa, Umar A. Abdullahi Jikas, Usaini Ibrahim Yarfi, Alhaji Inusa Bada Dinara, also with representatives from security agencies, the Farmers and Herdsmen Board, and other relevant stakeholders.

This initiative comes amidst recent clashes between farmers and herders in some parts of Jigawa State, posing a challenge to the prevailing peace in the region.
