Kebbi Govt Orders Immediate Repairs on Flood-Damaged Kebbi–Niger road
The Kebbi State Government has ordered urgent rehabilitation of a section of the Birnin Kebbi–Makera–International Road, which was severely damaged by flooding following a recent heavy downpour.
The washed-out portion of the road, a major trade corridor connecting Kebbi State to the Republic of Niger, has disrupted transportation and cross-border commerce since the incident earlier this week.
Governor Nasir Idris, who visited the affected site on Wednesday, directed the State Ministry of Works to immediately engage a qualified construction firm for emergency repairs. He also instructed the ministry to submit a cost estimate by Thursday for prompt approval and funding.
“This road is vital to both Kebbi State and the national economy,” Governor Idris said. “We are ready to release 50 percent of the project funds immediately to fast-track the work.”
Commissioner for Works, Abdullahi Umar Faruq Muslim, attributed the road collapse to inadequate drainage infrastructure. He explained that the lack of proper culverts and water channels allowed floodwaters to undermine the roadbed.
The governor was accompanied on the inspection by his deputy, Senator Umar Abubakar Tafida, as part of the administration’s commitment to restoring key infrastructure and minimizing economic disruptions.
