Lagos Judiciary Appoints Coroner to Investigate Afriland Tower Fire Tragedy
The Lagos State Judiciary has appointed a coroner to conduct a formal inquest into the deaths of 10 individuals who perished in the tragic Afriland Tower fire on Broad Street, Lagos Island, on September 16, 2025.
The inquest follows a petition filed by human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), urging the Chief Coroner of Lagos State to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident. Falana’s chambers, through Taiwo Olawanle, made the request in a letter dated September 29, invoking Section 15 of the Lagos State Coroner’s Law, 2007, which mandates an inquest in cases of violent, unnatural, or suspicious deaths.
“Considering the avoidable nature of this tragedy, we respectfully request that a coroner’s inquest be conducted to ascertain the cause of death and make appropriate recommendations,” the petition stated.
The fire reportedly originated from the inverter room in the building and spread quickly, producing thick smoke that trapped several occupants. Viral social media footage showed people leaping from the multi-storey structure, while others were rescued using makeshift ladders.
Among the victims were:
-
Four officials of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS)
-
Six staff members of United Capital
In response, the judiciary confirmed that the matter has been assigned to Coroner Court 9 of the Igbosere District, which currently sits at Court 4, Yaba Magisterial District.
A notice signed by Senior Magistrate A. Adetunji and issued on Monday announced a preliminary meeting with stakeholders, scheduled for Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at 9:00 a.m., to establish the framework for the inquest proceedings.
“Kindly provide detailed information on stakeholders who should be present at the meeting,” the notice stated.
The inquest aims to uncover the root causes of the tragedy, determine accountability, and provide safety recommendations to prevent similar incidents.
